7 Effective Home Remedies For Bedsores

Bedsores are a common problem in people confined to bed. Also known as pressure ulcers, they develop following persistent pressure on a specific area of the skin that occurs when a certain health problem limits the ability of a person to change position while lying or sitting.

Bedsores usually develop on the bony areas of the body such as the hips, heels, shoulder blades and tailbone. As these areas lack fats or muscles, the skin and the underlying tissues in these areas are vulnerable to breakage. Furthermore, constant pressure and lack of movement slow down blood circulation that worsens the injury and the tissues may eventually die if the bedsore is left unattended.

When a person is unable to move on his or her own, changing the position every two hours helps in minimizing bedsores. In case of existing bedsores, home remedies are often found to be effective.

1. Honey:

Honey is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It soothes the skin and assists in repairing the damaged skin. Honey even helps in reducing the pain and odor of bedsores. Before bedtime smear honey on a piece of gauze and place it on the sore. Remove the honey bandage the next morning and gently rinse the affected area. Reapply a new honey bandage to the sore in the night. With regular application, the honey remedy helps in clearing the sores within a few weeks.[1]


2. Cucumber Juice:

Applying cucumber juice to the bedsore helps in healing. Cucumber juice is good for the skin health. It soothes the area and helps reduce inflammation. When applied daily, it helps in repairing the damaged skin tissues and assists in development of new healthy tissues.[2]

3. Cumin Seeds And Coconut Milk:

To get rid of the bedsores, apply a mixture of cumin seeds and coconut milk to the affected areas. Mix a teaspoon of ground cumin seeds with two teaspoons of coconut milk. Spread the mixture on the bedsore. Rinse off the mixture after half an hour.[3]

4. Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil helps in repairing the damaged skin tissues when applied daily. It soothes the affected area and helps reduce the discomfort in the affected area. Coconut oil is also known for its antimicrobial property that helps in minimizing risk of secondary infections. Soak a piece of gauze in coconut oil and place it on the bedsore.[4]

5. Mustard Oil:

In the Indian folk medicine, mustard oil is used as a remedy for bedsores. Soak a clean cotton ball in mustard oil. Sprinkle few grains of salt and few drops of water on the cotton ball. Place the cotton ball on a pan and heat until the water starts sizzling. Remove the pan from heat and allow the cotton ball to cool down until the temperature becomes tolerable. Now apply the cotton ball to the bedsore.[5]

6. Cornstarch:

Dusting cornstarch powder on the bedsore twice a day helps in healing the sores. Cornstarch absorbs the sweat and keeps the area dry. This helps speed up the healing process and diminishes risk of secondary infections.[6]



7. Salt Water:

Rinse the affected area with salt water and cover the area with a gauze or bandage. Salt water helps in disinfecting the area. It also helps in removing the dead tissues. This simple home remedy helps in minimizing the risk of the bedsore getting infected and speeds up healing.[7]
