8 Effective Home Remedies For Flea Bites

Flea bites are itchy and painful which appear as red swollen bumps on arms, legs, ankles and feet. They generally attack pets, but if you have pets, there are chances they ride them to your home, you and your family members may also suffer from flea bites. Controlling the infestation should be your first line defense. Scratching the bites can cause bacterial infection. There are many simple home remedies which can be used to ease pain and inflammation of the irritating flea bites.

1. Ice pack

Wash the area of the bite with slightly warm soapy water. Apply ice pack to the affected area to sooth burning and itching sensation. If ice pack is not available, wrap some ice cubes in a cloth and apply cold compress for 8-10 minutes at a stretch. Repeat the process 3-4 times after a gap of 10-15 minutes.

The astringent properties of lemon is an effective remedy for drying out the rashes and reduce itchiness and swelling and can even be effective on your pets also. Using this remedy can help to control infestation of fleas on pets. Apply lemon juice on the bites with the help of cotton ball. Leave for 10-15 minutes and wash off with plain water.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties and amazing healing properties. Dilute tea tree oil and apply on the affected area to avoid infection, reduce itching and inflammation. For quick healing, repeat this remedy 3-4 times a day.

The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea can help to bring relief from swelling and itching of flea bites. Brew green tea and wash the bites with this tea when it cools. This remedy can be used on pets also. If green tea is not available, use black tea or chamomile tea. Instead of tea, you can use cooled tea bags by keeping them in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Baking soda has been used for treating various skin conditions because of its amazing healing qualities. By neutralizing acid balance, it can bring instant relief from itching and inflammation of flea bites. Make thick paste of baking soda by adding little water. Apply the paste to the affected part. Allow it to dry and rinse off with cold water. Repeat 2-3 times a day for quick relief.

The acetic acid contained in apple cider vinegar can help to prevent infection, sooth itching and irritation. You can use this remedy on your pets also. Apply undiluted apple cider vinegar on the affected area. For pets, mix equal portion of apple cider vinegar and water and spray all over your pets’ body 2-3 times a day.

8. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel has strong astringent quality which can relieve from itching and inflammation of flea bites. Soak a cotton ball with witch hazel; apply on inflamed area directly to get relief. It will help to reduce itchiness and swelling.
