1. Consume Sage

The herb sage is often recommended for treating excessive sweating. Ethereal oil, an active ingredient in sage, is believed to control sweat secretion. It reduces abnormal sweating by acting on the central nervous system. Studies have shown that this herb could reduce perspiration by almost 52 per cent.

Sage is especially beneficial for treating excessive sweating caused by nervousness or anxiety. Sweating could be normalized by drinking sage tea or sage juice. The benefit of drinking sage tea or juice is noticeable about two hours after taking the herbal preparation. The perspiration reducing effect of the herb might last throughout the day.

You can prepare sage tea by simmering about twenty sage leaves in two cups of water for about five minutes. You can even enjoy the cooling action of the herb by taking a footbath with sage tea or juice. Sage intake is not linked to side effects.

2. St. John’s Wort as sweating remedy

St. John’s wort is widely recommended as a natural antidepressant. Although the effectiveness of the herb in curing depression is debatable, studies have shown that it could indeed reduce sweating, which might be triggered by nervousness.

3. Aluminum chloride antiperspirant

An aluminum chloride based antiperspirant could control excessive sweating. It is usually used for treating excessive perspiration in the armpit, palms and soles. Although it can reduce sweating allover the body, dermatologists discourage using this antiperspirant on the face. Aluminum chloride causes severe eye irritation if it gets into the eye.

It reduces perspiration by temporarily plugging the sweat pores. The antiperspirant should be applied only on dry and clean skin. Unlike mild or natural antiperspirants, aluminum chloride based antiperspirants should not be used regularly.

First time users can apply it once in every two days, and later the frequency of use should be reduced to once in every one to three weeks. Inflammation and irritation in the affected area are the common side effects of aluminum chloride based antiperspirant use.

4. Baking soda as sweating remedy

You can treat excessive sweating with baking soda. Unlike most antiperspirants, baking soda does not act directly on the sweat glands. Instead, it reduces sweating by rapidly drying up the sweaty underarms, soles and palms. The alkaline baking soda neutralizes the acidic body sweat.

The gas formed because of the neutralization process cools the sweaty area. To increase the effectiveness of the baking soda treatment, it should be applied daily for several days. To reduce excessive body sweating, add half a cup baking soda to lukewarm water in your tub. Before soaking in the tub, remember to remove the dirt and grime from your skin with soap and water.

To open the pores of the skin use a mild exfoliating agent to remove the dead skins and unclog the pores. Now soak in the baking soda bath for about fifteen minutes. Rub the baking soda residue that had collected at the bottom of the tub allover your body, especially the palms, soles and armpits. After using the baking soda remedy consistently for a week, you can reduce the frequency of the treatment.

Sweaty palms and feet could be treated by soaking the hands or soles in a warm baking soda solution for about twenty to thirty minutes. After removing the hands and feet from the baking soda solution, do not use soap or water for washing the hands. Instead, dry your palms and soles with a towel.

5. Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is recommended for treating sweaty palms and feet. In this therapy, the palms or the feet are soaked in water and mild electricity is passed through the water. A typical iontophoresis therapy session lasts for about ten to twenty minutes. The patient experiences a mild tingling sensation in the hands or feet. The treatment is carried out once in every one or three weeks. Although iontophoresis could reduce excessive perspiration in the hands and feet, the mechanism through which iontophoresis reduces sweating is unclear.

6. Botox

If you are embarrassed by your sweaty underarms, you can try Botox. Botox is injected into twenty different spots in the armpit. This treatment might reduce underarm sweating for about six months, after which it should be reapplied to control sweating.

7. Natural antiperspirants

Witch hazel, largely used as an astringent, could double as an antiperspirant. The essential oil extracted from the bark and leaves of the witch hazel shrub is often used for treating inflammatory skin conditions and insect bites. As an astringent, witch hazel oil tightens the sweat pores, which might reduce sweating. It also inhibits bacterial growth in the sweaty underarms.

Dabbing a small amount of apple cider vinegar in the armpits might reduce excessive underarm sweating. The astringent property of apple cider vinegar tightens the sweat pore and dries up the underarm. The mild acidity of the vinegar could kill the odor causing bacteria that thrive in the sweaty areas of the body.

Tea leaf is a good source of tannin that can reduce excessive sweating. People suffering from sweaty palms and feet could soak their hands and feet in tea for about half an hour. The astringent action of the tannins in tea would shrink the sweat pores and reduce excessive sweating. Moreover, it can even fight bad body odor emitted by the sweaty soles.
