Acne Breakout During Adulthood

September 10, 2009

Acne appears largely during adoloscence, but nonetheless, babies as well as adults can also get acne. According to an estimate, about 20 percent men and 30 percent women experience acne breakouts between 20 and 60 years of age.

Adult acnes are often considered a tricky condition to deal with. The adult skin is drier than the adolescent skin. Although, sebum secretion is primarily responsible for this skin condition, but reducing oil production will make the adult skin drier. Increasing the dryness of the adult skin would accelerate the aging process of the skin.

Adult acne risk factors

Acne is often a chronic condition that extends to the adulthood. Ever since the acnes appeared during adoloscence or early adulthood, the flare-ups might persist even during a later part of your adult life. Adult acne is largely linked to hormonal changes in the body.

Androgen hormones in our bodies sometimes stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum. Changes in the levels of estrogen hormones can also stimulate sebum production. The excess sebum clogs the pores of the skin, producing acne. Adult acne in women usually occurs about 7 days prior to menstruation. Nonetheless, most women with adult acne have normal level of sex hormones in their bodies.

Only hypersensitivity to these sex hormones makes them prone to acne. Hormonal changes might also cause acne breakout during perimenopause, menopause and pregnancy. Sometimes corticosteroid-based medications can increase acne flare-ups. However, adult acne, when it is accompanied by appearance of facial hair, hair loss and irregular menstrual period, might be the symptom of a serious disease.

Adult acne home remedies

Dermatologists treat adult acne with topical antimicrobials, topical retinoid and oral antibiotics. Oral contraceptive pills can also help to prevent acne flare-ups by reducing the androgen activities. If you are susceptible to acne, use noncomedogenic cosmetics, which do not clog pores.

Proper cleansing routine could help to prevent acne without drying your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to clean your face at least twice a day. Do not use hot water to wash your face. The heat would further dry your skin. Finish washing your face within one to two minutes.
