Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease

Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease

Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease is a condition in which the patient develops fluid filled cysts with in the kidney. This may happen at the end of chronic kidney failure or in people who underwent dialysis for years. There are no hereditary factors that contribute to this disease. The cyst can be multiple or single. This disorder is more common in men that in women and it may affect kids and adults equally.

Causes of Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease

The major cause for cysts is the uremic condition in which there will be more nitrogenous waste in the urine than that of normal. Any disease like glomerulonephritis can develop this condition.

Similarly continuous dialysis may also cause this condition as dialysis can’t be a perfect substitute to kidney functioning. A person subjected to three or more years of dialysis are prone to develop acquired cystic kidney disease.

During the end of kidney diseases there may be immense loss of kidney tissues and it promotes hypertrophy or hyperplasia of tubular cells. This along with the secretion of fluid leads to the development of fluid filled cysts.

Symptoms of Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease

In initial stage it won‘t cause any symptom and it may be detected only when ultrasound scanning or imaging of the kidney is done. Sometimes these cysts become infected and may bleed. This may cause blood in urine. This may leads to pain in the abdominal region.

Risks of Having Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease

The cysts formed may increase the risk of a person to develop tumors in the kidney. These tumors can at times develop in to cancerous condition. Hence a person having these types of cysts must undergo regular checks to avoid the risk of getting cancer.

Some times the fluid accumulation with in the cyst is removed with the help of a needle inserted through the skin. People having acquired cystic kidney disease sometimes need surgical removal of the cysts in order to stop the bleeding or to get rid of the suspected tumors.
