Olive oil, especially extra virgin olive oil, is good for the heart. According to the Food and Drug Administration, risk of heart diseases could be reduced significantly by taking two tablespoons of olive oil per day. The extra virgin olive oil is a rich source of polyphenols. Polyphenol, a type of phytonutrient, is a powerful antioxidant substance. Through their antioxidant activities, polyphenols could protect the heart from diseases caused by clogging of blood vessels caused by oxidation of the low-density cholesterol. The monounsaturated fatty acid present in olive oil could reduce the overall level of blood cholesterol by reducing the bad cholesterol level in the blood.

It has been observed that intake of olive oil could reduce the blood pressure level. Moderate consumption of olive oil, equivalent to 25ml per day, could reduce the systolic blood pressure.
