Astragalus: The Chinese Medicinal Herb

Astragalus is an herb used in traditional Chinese medicines. This herb is a type of legume, belonging to the Fabaceae family. Alfalfa, soybean, peanut and chickpeas are other popular members of the Fabaceae family. Astragalus is the largest genera of this family. It contains over 2000 species. The different species of Astragalus include milk vetch, goat’s thorn and locoweed. Astragalus is called huang qi, meaning yellow leader, in Chinese. This perennial plant is found mainly in the temperate regions of China, Mongolia and Korea. After the plant becomes four years old, the roots of the plant are used for making herbal medicines.
Dried roots of astragalus are used for healing several illnesses. The medicinal properties of astragalus are derived from the flavonoids, triterpene glycosides, polysaccharides, amino acids and minerals present in this herb.
Boosts immunity
Plant compounds found in astragalus could significantly strengthen the immune system. It can prevent upper respiratory tract infections and colds. The antibiotic and antiviral properties of astragalus are utilized by Chinese medicine practitioners for healing infections. Studies have shown that astragalus could improve the immunity of cancer patients, whose immune system has been adversely affected by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Researchers have found that astragalus intake could increase T-cell counts of cancer patients. This herb can increase the life expectancy of cancer patients and accelerates recovery.
Good for heart
In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus is used for treating heart diseases. The phytochemicals found in this herb act as antioxidants that stimulates heart function by inhibiting damage caused by the free radicals.
Good for liver
Astragalus is capable of preventing liver damage. It can be used for treating hepatitis.
Natural diuretic
This medicinal herb acts as a mild diuretic. It can be useful for people suffering from problems of water retention or edema. Astragalus is effective in improving kidney function.
Cures wounds
Astragalus decoctions or ointments are used for treating external injuries.
Astragalus is taken in the form of liquid tinctures, fluid extract, powdered root or decoction. Astragalus doses above 25 grams per day could produce adverse side effects.
