Baby Acne Treatment
August 13, 2009
Acne is not only a teenage and early adulthood problem. Even infants can have acne. Baby acne is not a nice sight to see on your baby’s cheeks, chin and forehead. Nonetheless, many newborns suffer from this condition, which is temporary in nature and are not harmful for the child.
Baby acne causes
Unlike teen acne, baby acne might not be the symptom of hormonal changes in infants. Perhaps hormonal changes during pregnancy might be responsible for this condition. The maternal hormones that enter the infant through the placenta might remain in the infant’s body after delivery. These hormones might stimulate the sebaceous glands in infants, causing acne.
Baby acne symptoms
Compared to female babies, male babies are more prone to baby acne. Sometimes acne are present at the time of birth. Usually acne develop 2 to 4 weeks after birth. Nearly 20 percent babies suffer from acne. If left alone, baby acne disappears within four months. Baby acne appears as tiny red bumps on the baby’s cheek, forehead and chin. Sometimes the bumps may be white in color. White bumps, also known as milia, develop on the cheek, chin and nose.
Baby acne home remedies
If your baby is suffering from acne, wash his face with mild soap and water twice everyday. Gently pat your baby’s face dry. Cleanliness helps to prevent infections and reduces irritation. You should promptly wipe milk and saliva from his face.
These may add to his skin irritation. Do not apply any over the counter acne medication on your baby’s skin. If required, your pediatrician will prescribe a medicated lotion. Do not apply cream or oil on the acne. Boil a handful of neem leaves in a liter of water for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Allow this neem concoction to cool. Soak cotton in the neem solution and apply it on the acne.
You can also apply breast milk on the acne and wash it after ten minutes. This could also help to cure your baby’s acne. Mothers, who are breastfeeding their babies, should eat fresh fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. They should stay away from fried and oily foods.
