Benefits of Comfrey

Comfrey is perhaps a native of both Asia and Europe, although, it now grows in other parts of the world as well. The comfrey plant could grow up to 5 feet. It has large broad dark green colored leaves.
When sliced, a juicy fluid comes out of the dark colored turnip-like root of the comfrey plant. Purple or yellow colored flowers appear on the comfrey plants between May and September. The leaves and roots of the comfrey plants are used for treating various illnesses.
Nutrients in comfrey
Comfrey is a natural source of A, B and C vitamins. Other than alfalfa, comfrey is the only plant, which contains vitamin B12. It also contains important trace minerals such as selenium, germanium, zinc, copper, sulfur, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and iron. Comfrey is also rich in mucilaginous fiber.
Beneficial for gastrointestinal health
Comfrey is rich in mucilage fibers. Mucilage is a natural laxative that helps to soften the bowel. People suffering from constipation, could benefit immensely from this herb. Comfrey is beneficial for people suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Besides softening the bowel, comfrey also helps to cure diarrhea. Mucilage fiber present in comfrey absorbs the water in the stool, making it less watery. It is believed that gastric ulcer could be cured by drinking comfrey tea.
As fast aid
Comfrey leaves and roots are used by folk healers as fast aid. They are used for healing external injuries, sprains, bruises, cuts and inflammation. Comfrey leaves are used as poultice to heal abscesses and boils rapidly. Allantoin, a compound present in comfrey, stimulates growth of cells, promoting the healing process. To accelerate healing of bone fracture, one could consume comfrey tea.
Cures acne
You can solve your acne problem by applying cool comfrey tea on the acnes. Skin infections can be cured by applying comfrey leaves juice or comfrey tea on the sites of the infection.
Reduces arthritis pain
You can reduce your arthritis pain by applying comfrey juice or poultice made of comfrey leaves on the effected joints.
However, comfrey should not be used in any form by pregnant and lactating women and children. Individuals suffering from liver problems should stay away from this herb.
