The seeds of the flax plant and the oil extracted from the seeds are beneficial for human health. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil, which is also known as linseed oil, is powerhouse of alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.
ALA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid. Vegetarians, who do not consume fish and fish oil, can meet their omega-3 fatty acid requirement from linseed oil.
Prevents cancer
It is believed that flax seeds could help to prevent cancer. It is especially effective in preventing hormone-related cancers, such as prostrate cancer and breast cancer. Researchers have identified 27 compounds, capable of preventing cancer, in flax seed. According to studies, breast cancer could be prevented by having 25grams of flax seeds per day.
Good for the heart
Besides ALA, lignans, phytoestrogen and dietary fibers present in flax seed are effective in preventing cardiovascular disease. Flax seed is one of the richest sources lignans. According to the American Heart Association, regular intake of lignans could significantly reduce the risk of arterial degeneration and atherosclerosis in women.
Omega-3 fatty acids present in flax seeds, in the form of AHA, are capable of reducing blood cholesterol. Regular consumption of flax seeds can therefore prevent formation of plague on inner walls of the arteries. AHA, present in flax seeds could reduce blood pressure, triglycerides and blood sugar levels. Flax seeds are therefore also beneficial for people suffering from diabetes.
Food for menopause
Women suffering from menopausal symptoms could immensely benefit from consumption of flax seeds. Eating 40grams of flax seeds every day, for three months, could be an effective alternative to hormone replacement therapy. Phytoestrogens present in flax seeds could replenish estrogen in the body during menopause.
Promotes digestion
Flax seed is rich in dietary fibers. Dietary fibers ease bowel movement. Hence, people suffering from constipation could include flax seeds in their diet. Flax seeds are also capable of combating colon cancer.
