Benefits of Kava Kava
The calming effect of kava kava has made it the national drink of Fiji. For centuries, native inhabitants of the Pacific Islands have been drinking beverages made from kava kava.
Besides enjoying the kava kava drink, the inhabitants of these islands also use this herb for treating various ailments. Modern researches have upheld the healing properties of kava kava.
The botanical name of kava kava is Piper methysticum. Kava kava is a tall shrub with woody hairy branches and large, heart shaped, green colored leaves. The root of kava kava is mainly used for medicinal purposes. The main active ingredients found in the kava kava root are known as kavalactones. These phytochemicals reduce pain, relax the muscles, help to sleep and are effective in arresting convulsions.
Anxiety, Stress Remedy
Kava kava root is extensively used for reducing anxiety and stress. One of the drawbacks of most anti-anxiety and anti-depressant drugs is their slow healing process. Studies have shown that kava kava acts speedily to reduce anxiety. It might take up to one week for the kava kava root to reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety.
Kava kava root is found to be as effective as diazepam for reducing the anxiety symptoms. Moreover, unlike several benzodiazepine medications, kava kava does not reduce cognitive function. Researchers have found that besides reducing anxiety, this herb could help to improve mood and cognitive functions. Kava kava could be used for treating depression and mood swings in cancer patients and menopausal women.
