Benefits of Mustard Seed

Our barbecues and sandwiches become extremely delicious with a dash of mustard. This popular spice is in use for thousands of years. Mustard seed and the oil derived from the seeds are used by folk healers for treating various ailments.

Mustard plant belongs to the Brassica family of the cruciferous vegetable group. Cabbage, Brussels sprouts and broccoli are closely related to mustard. There are three varieties of mustard seeds – black mustard, white mustard and brown mustard. White mustards have a mild flavor, whereas black mustards are most pungent.

Prevents gastrointestinal diseases

Mustard seeds, like its other cousins of the of the Brassica group, is packed with anti-cancer plant compounds. Myrosinase enzymes, present in mustard, convert glucosinolates, a plant chemical also present in mustard seeds, into isothiocyanate, an anti-cancer agent. According to studies, these chemicals could prevent growth and development of cancer cells. Mustard is beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. It can prevent colon and rectum cancers.

Remedy for inflammation

Mustard seeds contain selenium, a trace mineral, known for its anti-inflammatory property. Mustard could reduce inflammation related to rheumatoid arthritis. Applying warm mustard oil on the joint affected by arthritis could help to reduce body pain and inflammation.

Cure for respiratory infection

Mustard is a good source of magnesium. Magnesium helps to reduce severity of asthma. Mustard can also cure coughs and cold. If you have cold, rubbing warm mustard oil on the nose, neck and chest helps to clear nose and bronchial congestion.

Good for the heart

Mustard is rich in magnesium, which helps to lower blood pressure and is good for the heart. Mustard oil is rich in antioxidants. It is heart friendly oil, used for cooking in the Indian subcontinent. Mustard oil lowers bad cholesterol in the blood.

For skin and hair care

Mustard seeds have antibacterial and antifungal property. Mustard seed paste could cure dandruff. Mustard oil is good for the hair. It prevents hair fall and retains the natural color of the hair. Mustard oil keeps the skin smooth and soft. The antioxidant action of linoleic acid, oleic acid and erucic acid, present in mustard seeds, keep the skin healthy.
