The health benefit of peppermint emanates from a plant chemical known as menthol. Menthol is noted for its several properties, beneficial for the health. Peppermint is used as tea, oil or as an additive.

Good for gastrointestinal health

Peppermint improves digestion and cures problems of indigestion. Regular intake of peppermint tea provides relief from discomfort caused by irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint also cures heartburn, prevents gastric ulcers and abdominal muscle cramps. Peppermint is also known to promote bile production. It helps to relax the muscles present in the bile duct. According to folk healer, peppermint tea could perhaps dissolve gallstones. Peppermint can also be used for treating flatulence and eliminating gas.

Remedy for cold

Peppermint is recommended for treating cold. The menthol present in peppermint acts as a decongestant. It also acts as an expectorant and helps to reduce cough. Peppermint extract is often an important ingredient in several cold and cough medicines. This herb is suitable for treating bronchitis, asthma and sinusitis.

For women’s health

Pregnant women can get rid of morning sickness, nausea and vomiting by drinking peppermint tea. Peppermint is also known to prevent miscarriage. Women suffering from problems of irregular periods could normalize their menstrual cycle by drinking peppermint tea.

Good for the skin

Peppermint helps to nourish the skin. Applying peppermint oil or cold peppermint tea, soothes the skin. The cooling action of menthol is good for oily skins. This herb helps to cure skin irritations.

Prevents infection

Peppermint is a natural antibiotic. It can prevent as well as cure infections, by killing bacteria, virus and fungi. Peppermint oil could be applied on the infected areas to cure insect bites, rashes, herpes and urinary tract infection.

Pain relief

When you have headache, apply peppermint oil on your head. Peppermint oil provides fast relief from aches. It can also cure muscle pains. Peppermint essential oil is used in aromatherapy for relaxing the muscles and curing stress, anxiety and depression.

Oral health

The antibiotic property of peppermint is utilized in several toothpastes. Peppermint kills germs, cures toothache and prevents bad breath.
