Benefits of Radish

Radish had probably reached the entire world from the countries of South Asia. In the ancient world, radish was a revered for its immense health benefits. Greek physicians prescribed radish for curing intoxication.

Radish is also equally popular in the modern world. From our salads and soups, this vegetable is used as a home remedy for several ailments.

The vegetable that we eat is the taproot of the plant. There are different varieties of radishes. They can be round or long and cylindrical. Radish is available in white, red, purple and black colors. Despite the difference in color, shape and size, all varieties of radish are equally nutritious. Besides the root, other parts of the radish plant, including leaves and seeds are used for medicinal purposes.

Nutrients present in radish

Radish is a rich source of vitamin C. The leaves of the plant has the largest concentration of vitamin C. There is nearly 6 times more vitamin C in the leaves than in the root. Radish also contains calcium, potassium, copper, folic acid and molybdenum. Radish is also a good source of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant.

Good for the liver

Sulfur based chemicals present in radish helps in bile secretion. Greens of radish are often used for treating jaundice patients. Regular consumption of a glass of fresh radish juice eases bowel movements and gradually improves appetite, speeding the recovery of jaundice patients.

Pile cure

Radish is useful in curing constipation. People suffering from piles or hemorrhoids could benefit by including radish regularly in their diet. Compared to cooked radish, raw radish is more effective in curing piles.

Remedy for respiratory problems

Respiratory ailments, including ordinary cough, whooping cough and bronchial discomfort could be healed with radish. Add a teaspoon of honey to a teaspoon of fresh radish juice, and consume this solution 2 to 3 times a day to cure throat and lung problems.

Cures for skin problem

To remove blackheads and blemishes, apply radish juice on your face everyday. Take a handful of radish seeds, and boil them in a liter of water for ten to fifteen minutes. Allow the solution to cool. Soak cotton in this solution and apply it on your skin regularly to remove the discolorations. Applying radish juice on insect bite areas reduces the swelling and pain.
