Sage is perhaps a native plant of the Mediterranean region. Nowadays, this silvery green herb grows in every continent. For thousands of years sage plant is used by folk healers for treating various ailments.
Nutrients in sage
Sage contains various beneficial plant chemicals. It contains flavonoid, tannin, cineole, camphor, rosmarinic acid and alpha and beta thujone. According to studies, these phytochemicals have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Sage can be used in the form of tea, juice or oil for treating hosts of bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Sage is useful for curing oral infections, including gum infections, mouth ulcers, gingivitis and dental abscesses. Sage can also be used for treating Candida yeast infections in the vagina and fingernails and toenails. Sage also fights colds and coughs. Gargling with sage tea helps to alleviate cough and sore throat.
Treats gastrointestinal problems
Sage can cure mild gastrointestinal problems. The tannin present in this herb can be used for treating diarrhea. The antiseptic property of sage can be utilized for treating intestinal infection. The bitterness of the herb is beneficial for treating problems of indigestion. It stimulates secretion of digestive juices, promotes bile flow and enhances function of the pancreas.
Reduces excess perspiration
If you suffer from excessive perspiration, drinking sage tea or juice can reduce sweating. The anti-hydrotic action of sage is useful for treating menopausal sweat, night sweat and excess salivation.
Reduces arthritis pain
Rosmarinic acid, present in sage, is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Sage could therefore heal inflammation linked to rheumatoid arthritis.
Prevents Alzheimer’s disease
According to studies, sage can be used for treating Alzheimer’s disease. This herb is good for the brain. It prevents memory loss.
Sage is generally taken in the form of tea. To prepare sage tea boil about three grams of sage leaves in 150ml of water for about ten to fifteen minutes. You can also get the benefits of the nutrients present in sage from sage juice. One teaspoon of sage juice should be mixed in a glass of water and taken two to three times a day until your ailment is cured.
