We love red tart cherries for their delicious taste. But hardly do we realize that while eating tart cherries, we are getting some essential phytochemicals, which can protect our body from various ailments.
Reduces pain
Tart cherries contain anthocyanin, a phytochemical, which researchers say is capable of reducing inflammation and pain. Anthocyanin can also reduce muscle fatigue. According to studies, by consuming tart cherries regularly, incidence of muscle damage from exercising could be prevented. Tart cherries are also effective in preventing gout. Tart cherries are also capable of reducing arthritis pain. A study conducted by Baylor Research Institute found, that osteoarthritis pain could be significantly reduced by taking pills made from Montmorency variety of tart cherry.
Fights cancer
Studies have shown that tart cherries could reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer. In animal studies, tart cherries are found to be effective in reducing the size of malignant tumors.
Prevents cardiovascular disease
According to researches, by including tart cherries in the regular diet, the level of blood cholesterol and triglycerides could be significantly reduced. According to a University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center study, rats did not gain weight when fed a fat rich diet mixed with tart cherry powder. Tart cherries are therefore believed to prevent fat deposition in the body. Tart cherries are believed to lower blood sugar level. They reduce fat storage in the liver. The incidence of oxidative stress responsible for causing diabetes and cardiovascular ailments can also be lowered by eating tart cherries. Mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases and coronary heart ailments could be significantly reduced, by consuming red tart cherries regularly.
Fights diabetes
Researchers have found that anthocyanins, present in cherries, are capable of increasing insulin production significantly.
Promotes antioxidant activity
According to a University of Michigan study, consuming one and a half cups of frozen tart cherries every day increases the antioxidant level in the body.
