Bountiful Uses of The Lotus

November 12, 2008

The lotus is a fruit that has been admired greatly for its beauty. Its appeal as it sits amidst a pond floating gracefully is a sight. What is often admired about the lotus is its ability to retain its charm and beauty as it is shrouded in grime, moss and dirt.

The lotus is used in many ways. The fruit makes for a religious offering and ornament, the stems are used in cooking. It also has a number of remedial powers that can increase its value manifold.

The lotus flower is cooling, soothing, calming, subsides burning sensations and thirst, and helps tone the heart. It is a diuretic, and slows down the beat of the pulse.

The dry fruit prepared from the lotus is used with success in many tonics. The green kernel is taken out, powdered and given early in the morning. Half to one teaspoonful of the powder is given with a cupful for milk for about forty days to dadies with leucorrhoea and backache. It makes for a good tonic as well.

Fresh tea or decoction made from the lotus flower is very good to subside hyperacidity and burning sensations.

While breaking the stem of the lotus a type of honey can be obtained. This honey applied with a glass rod to the eyes is very good.

The confection of lotus flower used along with liquorice is a very good remedy for piles.

A syrup can be prepared using lotus. Take about hundred grams of lotus flower, soak them in four times the amount of water, reduce it to 150 grams. To this add 200 grams of molasses, and this makes a syrup called lotus syrup. Take one or two ounces with equal quantities of water every morning and evening. This helps bring sound sleep, and is also useful after an attack of measles, chicken pox or small pox.

Use the lotus is more ways than one to bring greater flavours, tastes and cures in your home.
