Cancer Prevention With Diet


Studies have shown that nearly 30 to 40 percent cancers could be prevented with dietary changes. Researchers have found that certain foods could increase cancer risk. Obesity, nutrient deficiency and low fiber intake increase the risk of cancer.

On the other hand, several vitamins, phytochemicals and minerals could significantly reduce the incidence of cancer. Researchers have found that by adhering to a healthy cancer prevention diet, the risk of breast, prostate, colon and rectum cancers could decrease by 60 to 70 percent. Healthy diet could cause 40 to 50 percent decline in the incidence of lung cancer.

Avoid carcinogens

Carcinogens are often hidden in food products. To prevent cancer, you should avoid processed meat, barbecue meat and dark beer. Processed meat containing nitrates and nitrites are harmful for the body.

Nitrosamine, a carcinogen found in processed meat and dark beer, is a potent carcinogen. Charred barbecue meats often contain heterocyclic amines, which increase the risk of formation of cancer tumors. Smoked foods also contain carcinogenic hydrocarbons that are hazardous for health.

Sometimes traces of chemical pesticides and fertilizers might be present on fruits and vegetables. These chemicals increase the risk of cancer. Food additives and seasoning such as monosodium glutamate could be harmful for the body.

Reduce fat intake

Excess fat intake stimulates production of free radicals. Free radicals could damage the DNA of the cells, leading to cancer. To prevent cancer, less than 30 percent of your calorie intake should comprise of saturated fats. Meat, seafood, eggs, whole-fat milk are sources of saturated fats. Trans fats found in hydrogenated oils could cause harm to the body.

Increase intake of antioxidants

Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidant nutrients are beneficial for the health. Vitamins A, C and E are powerful antioxidant vitamins. Folic acid and vitamin D could also prevent development of cancer cells. Selenium and zinc are necessary for building a strong immune system. Plant nutrients such as carotenoids and flavonoids present in the pigments of fruits and vegetables could prevent cancer.

Consume dietary fibers

Dietary fibers present in leafy green vegetables and whole grains regulate bowel movement. They help to eliminate harmful toxins from the body.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, flax seeds and whole grains could prevent cancer.
