Causes and Remedies of Edema
Edema is the fluid accumulation with in the tissues of the body. Edema can be generalized edema in which the swelling will be all over the body. If it is localized edema then it will be seen some parts of the body only. Swelling may occur any where in the body like arms, legs, face, neck, ankles etc. Edema is a common problem in pregnant women.
Symptoms of Edema
Symptoms of edema include swelling in the legs, arms, calves, ankles, feet etc. There may a slight color change on the skin and the skin may appear pink to red in color. The skin on the affected area may stretch and shine. At times edema may cause cramps, pain and even result in difficulty to move the affected parts. If you press the affected area for a few seconds then it will leave a pit there which may disappear slowly. Continuous swelling may even result in skin ulceration.
Causes of Edema
Excessive straining of any part of the body may result in edema; like standing for long time may cause edema in legs. Edema can also be the result of high blood pressure, kidney or heart failure, anemia, liver disease, thyroid, pregnancy, menstrual cycle, low protein in the body, malnutrition, starvation etc. Certain medication and immobility may also cause edema..
Remedies for Edema
Rose hips containing bioflavonoid can help you to treat edema. You can drink rose hips tea.
Follow a diet that is rich in fibers. For getting enough protein take eggs, skinless chicken, white fish, small quantity of butter milk, cheese, low fat yogurt etc. Also reduce the amount of sodium in your daily diet. Try to reduce the amount of carbohydrate in your diet as carbohydrate will retain more water.
Alfalfa contains essential minerals along with chlorophyll which is a detoxifier. It is advised that a person having edema has to take at least 3000 milligrams of alfalfa daily.
Warm a little of mustard oil in a pan and apply it on the affected parts. Or soak two or three teaspoon mustard seeds in water and then use this solution on the affected area. This will help you to relieve the edema.
