Causes and Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person eats a lot of food with in a short period and then purge. Such people will do this in secret and they are doing this in fear of gaining weight and in shame of over eating. Most of the times such people eat food that has high calorie like ice cream, cake, chocolate etc. In order to get rid of the food these people use laxatives, diuretics or at times with over exercising. With such techniques most of the people having bulimia maintains to have normal weight. If this condition is not treated then it may leads to severe nutritional problems and complications.

Causes of Bulimia Nervosa

The exact cause of this disorder is actually unaware but people having a family history of this disorder are more prone to develop this. Mostly this disorder is seen in teenagers and in young women between the age of 12 to 21 years. Males are also seen to develop this disorder. Psychological problems like low self esteem, self mutilation, depression etc. Those who are subjected to sexual abuse and physical abuse are also likely to show bulimia nervosa. People having difficulty in expressing anger may also show this disorder.

Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa

The affected person tends to eat a lot of high calorie food but normally in secret. Such people have very less control over their eating habit. These people may rush to the bathroom soon after finishing their meals. Their body weight may fluctuate regularly and they may develop diarrhea, gas, nausea, constipation, abdominal pain etc. Many of them have sore throat as the vomiting creates tears on the throat. Constant vomiting may leads to dehydration also. Vomiting may also bring acidic gastric juice to the mouth and it may cause damage to the enamel of the tooth. The patient may also loss lot of vitamins and minerals in this process of purging and it leads to several deficiency diseases. Most of ladies have irregular menstrual cycles. Many of these people have depression too.

If notice any person having this problem then take them to a doctor and a treatment of compounding medication and psychotherapy may help them to get out of this disorder.
