November 18, 2009
Hematuria
Hematuria is the presence of blood in the Urine. It can be bleeding from any part of the genitourinary tract like kidney, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra etc. Sometimes the reason for this bleeding can be very simple as over exercise and at times it can be a life threatening disease.
There are two types of hematuria called gross hematuria and microscopic hematuria. In gross hematuria the blood of the affected person becomes red or brown in color and even at times the urine is accompanied with large blood clots. While in microscopic hematuria the blood content in the urine will be very less and it can be seen only through a microscope.
Symptoms of Hematuria
Most of the patients having this disease have blood in the urine with no other accompanying problems. Others may have pain in the abdomen. Some others may have fever, pain while urinating, frequent urge to urinate, decreased urinary force, incomplete voiding etc.
Causes of Hematuria
Urinary infection is a major cause of blood in the urine and is commonly seen in women than in men. Here the bacteria or virus enter to your body and multiplies inside the bladder. This infection is accompanied with microscopic level of blood in urine, strong smell of urine and burning sensation while urinating.
Kidney stones or bladder stones may also cause blood in urine and at times it may cause pain in the abdomen especially when the stone blocks the urinary tract. Cancer or tumors in any part of the urinary tract may also leads to bleeding. Even the prostate cancer in men may also cause blood in urine. Certain kidney diseases like glomerulonephritis may also cause blood in urine. Similarly any injury to the parts of the kidney may cause bleeding. Heredity diseases like sickle cell anemia, Von Hippel-Landau disease also cause blood in urine. Certain medications like penicillin, aspirin, heparin etc also leads to blood in urine.
If you feel to have a color change in your urine then its better to discuss the matter with your doctor who can help you better.
