November 30, 2009

Causes for Dark Colored Urine

Urine consists of waste eliminated from the body along with the excess water. Usually urine is straw yellow in color and consists of sodium chloride, urea, and traces of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and uric acid. Any change in this constitution and color can be a sign of a very harmful disease or it may also be a harmless change.

Causes of Abnormal Urine

Food

The abnormal color of the urine can be due to the consumption of food like some colored candies. The dyes present in food items may get excreted from the body through the urine. Similarly certain vegetables like asparagus can turn the urine color in to dark green while rhubarb turns the urine color in to dark orange. If the color of the urine turns to normal with in a day or two that means the color change was harmless.

Drugs

Certain medication tends to create a dark color in the urine. Medications like some antibiotics, medications for malaria, certain laxatives etc may turn the color of your urine in to dark.

Hemolytic Anemia

This is a disorder in which the red blood cells get destructed in its early stage itself and this result in the loss of blood through urine. Due to the hemoglobin level in the body decreases and the patient may experience fatigue, yellow color of eyes and skin along with a pain in the upper abdomen.

Lever Complaint

Any lever complaint or infection in the lever leads to the excessive release of bile in to the urine and this causes deep brown color to the urine.

Urinary Tract Infection

In case of chronic urinary tract infection the urine may turn in to dark colored, cloudy or turbid. There may be a burning pain along with an offensive smell while urinating. It is often accompanied with abdominal pain.

Acute Tubular Necrosis

This is a condition in which the affected person may not get enough oxygen to their kidneys. This can be due to blood transfusion, injury etc and along with the dark urine the person may also feel nausea, sleepy, vomiting etc.

If you notice any such color changes then drink a lot of water and consume good amount of fruits and vegetables. Keep yourself hygiene and this may help you to control most of the diseases.
