Causes for Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder is one of the most mobile joint in your body. Shoulder joint is made up of shoulder blade and arm bone and the socket of shoulder joint is very shallow and hence it allows a wide range of movements. The rotator cuff of the shoulder consists of muscles and tendons that attach the arm to the shoulder joint and thus allows the arm to move. If there is any inflammation, swelling, tearing or fracture to any of these structures then it may cause shoulder pain.

Causes for Shoulder Pain

Rotator cuff Tendonitis

This is a condition in which the tendon that passes beneath the bony arch of the shoulder gets trapped in this rigid arch. The compression that occurs on the tendon leads to damage and inflammation of the tendon. This is called rotator cuff tendonitis. This can be due to an injury, wear and tear or because of the constant use of the shoulders.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a condition in which the tendons, muscles, ligaments etc get stiffened and makes it difficult to move your shoulder. This is also named as adhesive capsulitis.

Rotator Cuff Tear

This happens when the tendons that are seen in the rotator cuff gets separated from the bones either completely or partially.

Arthritis

Arthritis may affect the shoulder joint and results in loss of protective cartilage and narrowing of joints. This requires joint replacement.

Bursitis

Bursa is a fluid filled sac that remains in between the tendons and the skin or the bone. Bursa acts as a shield and thus protects the joint from jerks. It also makes the movement more comfortable. Any inflammation to this bursa is called bursitis and it cause painful shoulders.

Calcific Tendonitis

In this condition there will be calcium deposits in the tendon inside the rotator cuff. This may also cause pain while moving the shoulder.

Dislocation of Shoulder

Dislocation of shoulder happens when the ball shaped top of the arm bulges out of the socket.

Fracture

Any fracture to the shoulder bones may also result in severe pain accompanied with swelling on the area.

If you have severe shoulder pain along with swelling, fever and redness on the shoulder then you have to meet your doctor. With proper exercises and care you can avoid shoulder pain.
