Ovary is a part of female reproductive system and it produces the egg in every month. Ovarian cancer is the proliferated growth of cells inside the ovary. It may affect the women of about 20-80 years old. If noticed earlier then it can be treated. Certain factors that promote the risk of ovarian cancer are
Causes of Ovarian Cancer
1. Pre history of Cancer
Women who had a pre history of any cancer like that of colon cancer, breast cancer, rectum cancer etc are in greater risk of getting ovarian cancer.
2. Family History
People with family history of cancer are more prone to getting the disease.. If any member of your family is affected with cancer like your mother, sister, daughter or other close blood relatives etc, then you are also likely to get ovarian cancer. If the blood relatives become cancer patient when they are young, then you are at more risk in acquiring this disease. In order to avoid the risk you can consult a genetic consular and he will help you in distinguishing the specific cancer causing gene.
3. Menstrual History
Hormonal changes and the level of hormones present in the body are a key factor for determining this disease. Those who had their menstrual cycle started before 12 years of age and who had the cycle after 50 years are subjected to more hormonal variations and hence are at higher risk of having this disease.
4. Age
Women at the edge of menopause will be experiencing more hormonal variations and so they are prone to get this disease. Hence women around 50years are at greater risk
5. Obesity
Obesity is also a reason for causing ovarian cancer as obesity increases the estrogen production. This estrogen can stimulate the cells of ovary and thus can trigger ovarian cancer. Obesity during post menopausal period is considered to be more risky.
6. Pregnancy History
Women who had undergone fertility treatment for inducing ovulation and those who have no kids or had their first kid only after 30 years are more likely to develop ovarian cancer. Multiple pregnancies, breast feeding and usage of oral contraceptives are regarded as a protection against ovarian cancer.
7. Talcum Powder
Talcum powder is found to have asbestos which is a good carcinogenic agent. Women who use talcum powder in the napkins or genital area subjected to higher risk of getting ovarian cancer.
