Combatting Cataract

A number of health problems occur as we age. The body becomes less immune and common diseases occur more frequently. The bones become weaker and more porous. Eyesight begins to deteriorate. A common ailment suffered by men and women alike is cataract.

Cataract is most likely to occur after the age of fifty. Regular check-ups are recommended with growing age. Proper detection and due care is essential as early as possible to prevent serious problems, and even total loss of eyesight.

Cataract occurs due to the clouding of the eye. Protein coaggulates and tends to deposit, giving a pearly appearance in the eye.

The most common symptoms of cataract are blurred vision, sensitivity to glare, and progressive loss of colour vision. Images tend to appear yellowish, and that is a sure sign that you need the eyes tested immediately.

The cure for cataract is to have it surgically attended to. There are drops available for the eyes which dissolve the cataract in the eye, but this is only temporary and lasts for a few hours. The only permanent cure is surgery. Along with removal of the cataract, a lens is fitted into the eye which allows the eye to correct vision. This lens imade of acrylic plastic and can even last for over forty years in the eye without deteriorating.

Today cataract is cared for easily and patients are sent home within hours of surgery. While care has to be taken for a few weeks following surgery, normal routines may be resumed in a short while, after consultation with the doctor.

Today unfortunately, cataract is not confined to the elderly alone. Cataract has been found in newborns whose mothers contracted rubella while the baby is still in the womb. Steroids, and undue exposure to infrared rays also cause cataract. Infections also can lead to cataract. It is best to avoid straining the eyes overly, and shift the gaze occasionally while concentrating on either a job or in from of the computer.
