Control Measures for Rats

Rats are one of the troublesome pests that we can see both in rural and in urban areas. They are mammals and that may grow in different climatic conditions. Rats will feed on our food and water will contaminate it with their droppings, fur, urine etc.

Rats also carries mites, fleas along with them will spread them where ever they go. They remain as the carriers and will transmit many diseases to human beings. The most commonly spread diseases through rat are murine typhus, bubonic plague, spirochetal jaundice, rabies, Leptospirosis, rat bite fever etc.

They are creating problems not only in fields, warehouses, processing industries, super markets etc but also in our homes. Rats may gnaw the electric wires, clothes, cupboards etc. So it is necessary to eliminate rats from our homes.

Control Measures for Rats

1. While constructing houses take care to install rat proofs like protecting the doors and windows with metal sheets at their edges and thus it becomes difficult for the rats to gnaw. Also ensure that you have plugged the large holes in your house with wire mesh metal sheets.

2. Sanitation plays an important role in eliminating the rats. You have to keep your garbage bin neatly and closed and have to dispose your garbage timely. Store your foods, fire woods, garden equipments etc properly.

3. You can trap the rats with rat traps which are now available in market and some of them are sticky boxes, glue traps, snap traps, tube traps, live traps etc. Traps can be used repetitively and it will give good and quick results. Here you can also avoid the harmful pesticides and the dangerous associated with other pets in your home.

4. Mix corn meal and plaster of paris in equal proportion and keep this in a small box or bowl. Keep this mixture in the path of the rat and rat consume this will develop lumps when they drink water. These concrete like lumps in the digestive tract will kill them.

5. Soda pop is found to be good for getting rid of rats. Keep soda pop in a bowl and keep this in the way of rats. Rats will love to drink this and will die due to the carbonization.

6. You can also use mashed potatoes for killing the rats. Mashed potatoes won’t digest easily in rat stomach and this in turn may cause swelling and they may die.

7. Now a day electronic rat repellents are also available and they will produce high frequency sounds that may scare rats while it will inaudible to human beings. You can install electronic rat repellents in your home.
