Manufacturers of some of these supplements claim that these products could heal depression naturally.
Depression supplements
St. John’s wort
For centuries, St.John’s wort is used as an herbal remedy for treating depression. Recent studies have shown that dietary supplements containing St.John’s wort could indeed cure mild depression. However, severe or chronic depression might not be cured with St. John’s herb. In few cases, St. John’s herb was found to be more effective than conventional antidepressants in treating depression. St. John’s wort supplements are sold as capsules, liquid extracts and as herbal tea.
Fish oil supplement
Fish oil supplements could be taken alone or in combination with antidepressant medications for treating depression. The omega-3 fatty acid rich supplements could improve brain function. Researchers have observed that people prone to depression usually have low level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the blood. Besides EPA, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is necessary for normal brain function. Fish oil is one of the best sources of both EPA and DHA. Both these omega-3 fatty acids are even effective in treating the symptoms of bipolar disorder.
Saffron
This popular culinary spice is used in traditional Persian medicine for treating depression. Recent researches have shown that saffron could improve symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Saffron supplements could be taken as an alternative to conventional antidepressants.
Kava Kava
Herbal supplements containing kava kava might be taken to relax your nervous system. Kava kava promotes sleep, relaxes muscles and helps to reduce the symptoms of depression.
Tryptophan
Dietary supplements containing tryptophan could improve the symptoms of depression by stimulating serotonin secretion. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that controls mood changes. However, people taking this supplement might develop eosinophilia myalgia syndrome, a type of blood disorder. Therefore, you should consult your physician before taking tryptophan supplements.
Folic acid supplements
Folic acid is required for the production of certain neurotransmitters. Folic acid supplements are occasionally recommended for treating the symptoms of depression. However, for better results, folic acid supplements should be taken with antidepressant medications.
