We hardly consider snoring as a major problem. However, snoring can be the early symptom of a serious physical problem.
Reasons for snoring
Snoring may occur temporarily when you have cold, allergies or throat problems. Temporary snoring is not a matter of concern. It is cured as soon as you get rid of your cold or allergy problems. However, chronic snoring can cause severe problems. Chronic snoring may cause stroke. It can increase blood pressure, diabetes and worsen cardiac ailments.
Chronic snoring also causes sleep deprivation. Sleep apnea can also be responsible for chronic snoring. People suffering from sleep apnea experience obstruction in breathing while sleeping. They wake up several times throughout the night. Sleep apnea not only causes sleep deprivation, but it can also cause death.
Chronic snoring largely occurs when the airway inside our throat becomes narrow. This may be a genetic problem. You might inherit narrow throat from your parents. Compared to women, men have narrow airway in their throat. Therefore, men are more prone to snoring than women. Obesity can increase snoring.
When we gain weight, fats deposit around our throat. This narrows the airway of our throat, increasing snoring. As we age, our air passages become narrow and the muscles of our throat become weak. Snoring might therefore increase with age.
Snoring can also be the side effect of consuming alcohol and certain sedatives and antihistamines. These medicines as well as alcohol relax the muscles of our throat and tongue, increasing snoring. Deformity in nasal septum can cause snoring.
Adjustment in your sleeping posture can prevent snoring. The easiest way to stop snoring is to sleep on your side and not on your back. Do not sleep with a soft pillow. Sleeping on a raised pillow can prevent snoring. To prevent snoring, you can even raise the head of your bed by a few inches.
Avoid alcohol, tranquilizers and antihistamine medicines. Losing weight helps to reduce snoring. Remove nose congestion with a decongestant medicine before going to bed. Gargle with sage tea before going to bed. This helps to clear the air passage of your throat, reducing snoring. Drinking eucalyptus tea can also prevent snoring.
