Diaper Rashes in Infants
November 26, 2008
Diaper rashes occur very commonly in infants. It is not only a cause for great discomfort in the child, but also for great anxiety in the parent.
This is primarily an inflammation or dermatitis which occurs on the thigh and buttock region. The allergy itself is accompanied by a nagging itchy sensation. Irritation, undue crying and frequent itching are the first tell tale signs of diaper rash. Visibly, you will notice some redness along the lines of the diaper, along with small eruptions on the skin.
The main cause of diaper rash is exposure to urine and faeces in the diaper. While children are left in the diaper, parents often fail to notice children’s movements within. They often leave diapers on for very long, and the child remains in the discomfort, sometimes without even expressing his feeling.
Some children have naturally sensitive skin and very close exposure to diapers could cause irritation.
Abrasion and frictions caused by the diaper while the child walks or moves also causes irritaiton, and this could result in rashes. For this reason, it is very important to use the correct diapers for children that are not too tight and allow free moevement.
Sometimes, children sweat in the diaper. The sweat reacts with the skin causing rashes often. This is another reason for diaper rash.
It must be remembered that the bottom and genitals are by far the most sensitive areas of the child’s body, and the breeding ground for infections. These areas must be kept clean and dry at all times. Change the baby’s diaper frequently, especially if you notice that the child has soiled the diaper. Once you have removed a used diaper, clean the area well with either water or wet wipe to ensure all germs and other dirt is removed before putting on a fresh diaper. Make sure the area is dry and another diaper is not put on moist skin.
Barrier creams are available to cure diaper rash. If they agree with your child’s skin, use them to cure the rash before it is severe. Coconut oil is the best natural cure and not only relieves itching, but also heals faster. If the rash appears reddish, cod liver oil may be used to curb infection.
