Dietary Guidelines To Control Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is referred to the infectious condition of conjunctiva, the skinny translucent membrane layering the frontage of eye. The root causes of conjunctivitis are viral or bacterial infections, contact with irritants, pollution and inadequate dietary habits.
As per optometrists, conjunctivitis is a mild and very common eye disease though direct contact with person suffering from conjunctivitis should be avoided owing to its contagious properties. The symptoms of this eye disease include appearance of red spots in white portion of eye, unremitting flow of water from infected eye, burning, itching and distorted vision.
The most excellent method to initiate the healing process is to adopt a fresh fruit diet for at least 7 days. The diet chart might comprise fresh seasonal ripe fruits like apple, orange, pineapple etc. The consumption of banana and any sort of spices is strictly prohibited.
Juice – Juices of fresh carrot or oranges diluted with lukewarm water should be consumed after equal intervals several times a day to get rapid relief from severe itching and pain. It is important to maintain a gap of 2 hours before repeating another glass of juice.
The consumption of additional fruits must be avoided, when following a juice based diet. Juice of raw carrots and spinach blended together in quantities of 300ml and 200ml respectively are much valuable in treatment of conjunctivitis.
Vitamins – Raw food items like milk, pumpkin, tomatoes, mangoes, papaya, almonds that are rich in vitamin A and B2 should be consumed in liberal amount for an effectual treatment of conjunctivitis.
Enema – A warm water enema should be taken once a day for a minimum of seven days. It helps in cleansing the bowels and flush out the toxins from body.
Local Treatment – Covering eyes with a soft cloth dipped in ice cold water for 10-12 minutes provides instantaneous relief from pain, burning and itching. This treatment can be repeated several times a day. It is advisable to not wear contact lenses for the duration of inflammation. Direct exposure to light is one of the root causes that trigger severe pain in eyes.
Avoid – A person suffering from conjunctivitis should avoid consumption of starchy foods like white bread, potatoes, pies, baked foods, caffeine, salt, all meat products and protein rich products. Usage of soaps, shampoos and other cosmetic products should be avoided to avert any local damage to eyes.
