Dietary Guidelines to Prevent Swine Flu

July 25, 2009

As of today, there are over 9,500 reported cases of swine flu all over United Kingdom alone. Studies have confirmed that people with fragile immune system have been identified to be more prone to catch swine flu as compared to the persons who consume healthy diets.

The best way to prevent a swine flu attack is to include adequate quantities of vitamins, minerals etc. in major meals of day. Adequate supply of nutrition to body augments its internal defense system.  It is of utmost importance to maintain hygiene especially while socializing owing to the contagious properties of swine flu. Given below are dietary guidelines to assist people in preventing swine flu and to restore their health in most natural way.

Tissue Barriers – The inclusion of foods like certified animal products, fresh vegetables, pulses, seeds and soya in major meals stimulate epithelial cells. Epithelial cells are known as tissue barriers in body. The main function of epithelial cells is to act as a protective agent for underlying tissues.

Vitamin A – Fresh oranges and green leafy vegetables are good sources of vitamin A.  Regular consumption of diet rich in vitamin A strengthens the respiratory membranes. Superior levels of respiratory membranes diminish the probabilities of a swine flu attack.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C, when taken in sufficient quantity endows WBC’s with extra strength to eliminate harmful substances. It is highly recommended to include vitamin C rich foods in every meal of day to stimulate macrophage cells and reduces the condition of oxidative stress. Undiluted extract of fresh citrus fruits must be consumed several times a day to deal with deficiency of vitamin C in body.

Zinc – Zinc is one of the most significant minerals required by the body to prevent swine flu and revitalize damaged immune system. Zinc acts as a stimulating agent of T-cells, which are a form of antibodies that helps in suppressing any viral attack. Potatoes, milk, yogurt, lobsters, clams, pork meat are few examples of zinc rich foods.

The prescribed daily dosage limit for zinc is confined to 11 mg and 8 mg for adult males and females, respectively. It is recommended to discourage excessive consumption of zinc as it might result in diminution of HDL cholesterol levels as well as immune system.
