Different Types of Glaucoma that Affects the Vision
Glaucoma that Affects the Vision
Glaucoma is a disease affecting the eyes. It cause damage to the optic nerve and thus impairs the normal vision. Optic nerve connects the brain and the retina and thus help in making the vision possible. There may be high pressure with in the eye and cause problems to the peripheral vision and at times leads to blindness. Many above the age of 60 and those who have diabetes are at risk of having this disease. Poor nutrition, stress, high blood pressure etc may also cause glaucoma. There are different types of glaucoma and they are
Open Angle Glaucoma
This type of glaucoma affects the people above 50 years of age and it may not cause any symptoms in initial stage. Gradually the symptoms of glaucoma may develop in both eyes or in one eye. Sometimes glaucoma impairs the vision on the side and the affected person may have a tubular vision. The affected person will have a vision similar to that of looking through a tube. He can’t see the objects that remain on the side while he can see the objects in front of his eyes. It may leads to irreversible blindness.
Angle Closure Glaucoma
In this type of glaucoma the symptoms appears suddenly and in a violent manner. The person who has angle closure glaucoma may have severe pain, redness in the eye, nausea and blurred vision. This is because the eye fluid on the front portion of the eye can’t move to the angles of the eye and thus to drain out. Thus fluid remains in the front portion of the eye and builds the pressure inside the eye. This is an emergency situation and you need to meet your doctor immediately.
Congenital Glaucoma
Congenital glaucoma usually affects the people above 35 years of age and it may also affect the kids. Here the kids are born with some defects in their eye’s angle that impairs the usual drainage of eye fluid. Such kids may have symptoms like sensitivity towards light, excessive tears in the eyes, cloudiness in the eye etc.
Low Tension or Normal Tension Glaucoma
In certain cases glaucoma may also develops with out having any pressure inside the eyes and this is called normal tension or low tension glaucoma. While an increased eye pressure with out any damage to optic nerve is not considered as glaucoma.
