Dry Eyes Remedies

July 25, 2009

Healthy eyes are always covered with a thin film of fluid. As we blink, tear secreted in the eye spreads evenly over the eye, keeping them moist. However, decreased production of tear makes the eyes dry. Dryness causes discomfort and should be treated to prevent further problems that might lead to poor vision.

Dry eyes causes

Tear not only keeps the eye moist, but it also prevents infection and promotes cell growth. A tear film is comprised of three layers. The outer layer of the tear film is made of lipids, which are fatty oils. They are produced by the meibomian glands of the eyelids.

Lipids prevent rapid evaporation of the inner layer of the tear film, which is made of water. Water present in the middle of the tear film contains some salt. It is secreted from the lacrimal or tear glands. It cleans the eyes and flashes out foreign particles from the eyes. The inner layer of the tear film is made up of mucus.

Mucus helps to spread the tear film evenly over the eye. Any discrepancy in the composition of these three layers of the tear film can cause dry eyes. Meibomian malfunction, caused by clogged meibomian glands, swollen eyelids or rosacea, inhibits secretion of mucus causing dry eyes. Problems of the lacrimal gland causes reduced water secretion in the eyes.

In the absence of water, oil and mucus cause eye irritation. Eyelid problems that reduces blinking also leads to dry eyes. Dry eyes can also develop from menopausal hormonal change, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and deficiency of vitamin A.

Natural remedies for Dry eyes

Currently the rising incidence of dry eyes is largely considered a lifestyle problem. Poor blinking rate, associated with working in front of computers for long time, makes the eyes dry.

To prevent dry eyes take five minutes break from your work every hour. During the break, consciously blink for several seconds. Next, close your eyes for a minute. Avoid rubbing your eyes.

Keep your eyes away from air conditioners, hair driers and smoke. Do not splash water in your eyes. Water washes away the tear from the eyes, drying the eyes. It is recommended to wear goggles while swimming. Fish oil is considered good for the eyes. Consume fish oil to prevent dry eyes.
