September 11, 2009

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is characterized by pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. It usually occurs after eating. A burning sensation or heartburn often accompanies indigestion.

Indigestion causes

Indigestion is quite common among adults. When the acid present in the stomach, flows back to the esophagus, indigestion and heartburn occurs. Indigestion might also occur due to irritation in the stomach. Inflammation of the stomach lining might also cause inflammation. The food that we eat is largely responsible for this painful condition.

Indigestion might develop from smoking and alcohol intake. Eating excessive fatty and spicy foods can also trigger indigestion. Caffeine can also cause indigestion. Overeating as well as missing meals can cause indigestion. Indigestion is often a side effect of certain painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Stress and anxiety can also be responsible for this condition.

Indigestion remedies

Indigestion primarily results from inability to digest foods. Improving your digestion could prevent indigestion problems. Discomforts associated with indigestion could be easily prevented by maintaining a healthy eating habit. To avoid indigestion, limit intake of fatty foods, caffeine and alcohol.

Fibrous vegetables and fruits should be adequately consumed to improve digestion. You should neither overeat nor skip meals. Instead of having a large meal, you should have several small meals. Going on a brisk walk regularly, for at least 30 minutes, could cure your digestion problems. Certain herbal teas could cure indigestion.

If you are suffering from indigestion, you can have tea made from ginger, chamomile or mint. Berries, such as raspberry and blackberry, can provide relief from indigestion.

To get speedy relief from indigestion mix one teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of water and drink the solution. Add three to four drops of mint essence in a cup of water and drink it to reduce your indigestion.

Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and drink the solution to cure your digestion problems. Eating celery can also alleviate the discomfort. Add one tablespoon of grounded cinnamon to a glass of water, and drink it for indigestion relief.
