Eat Right on Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is a process of cleansing the body artificially. When the kidney of a person stops functioning, waste gets accumulate in his blood. In such patients hemodialysis is being done. Here a dialysis machine is used to remove the waste products from the body. In order to maintain a good health between these dialyses, kidney patients must follow a well balanced diet that limits the development of potentially dangerous materials in the blood.
If you follow the eating habits which you were having prior to the onset of this disease even after the disease is diagnosed then it may leads to fluid retention in the body. This may also increase your blood pressure and in turn increases the pressure on your heart. So you must take care of your food habits.
Limit Your Fluid Intake and sodium
Foods like fruits, vegetables, ice cream, soup, jelly etc contains fluid. Intake of these foods along with water will increase your fluid intake and thus increases your body weight resulting in swelling in the body. In order to limit your fluid intake, reduce your salt consumption. This will limit your sodium intake and protects your heart too. When you become thirsty take juices in the form of ice cubes and eat it like lollypop. This may help you to manage your thirst.
Control Potassium Intake
If the amount of potassium increases in your body it may affect the steadiness of your heart beat and may even leads you to death. In order to control the potassium level you have to avoid bananas, avocados, dried fruits, melons, cantaloupe, orange, apricots, potatoes, tomatoes, yogurt, peanuts, raisins, milk, sardines etc.
Control your Phosphorus Intake
When the amount of phosphorus increases in your blood it will remove the calcium and makes your bone and teeth weak. It m ay also cause itching of the skin. Some of the foods that contain phosphorus are milk, peas, cheese, nuts, peanut butter, colas etc. kidney patients must take some phosphate binder like calcium carbonate, tums, renagel etc which may act as a sponge and will draw and bind excess phosphorus in the stomach and thus helps to eliminate it through the stool. This will reduce the amount of phosphorus in the blood.
Control your Protein Intake
Take foods that are rich in high quality protein as protein helps you to repair the body tissues and muscles. It also makes you healthy. Foods having high quality protein include fish, eggs, poultry, meat etc.
Some patients need to improve the weight while on dialysis while some needs to reduce. If you have to gain weight then take olive oil, safflower oil, canola oil etc.
