Eating to Counter Stress

December 10, 2008

Most of us just look for an excuse to want to eat.. to celebrate an event, a festival, we love to indulge when we are happy, even when we get together with friends. Another handy excuse is having to eat to beat the blues. We eat when we are sad. Eating to counter stress is another phenomenon. What has been found, however, is that the right foods to fight different conditions can actually prove helpful. And if you eat the right foods in the right quantities, you have little reason to fear.

Complex carbohydrates are very good at beating stress. They release instant energy and help pep you up. The best form is the banana, which is loaded with properties that help calm the body, and also fight other conditions that might arise in the body from stress, like low bood sugar and fatigue. Other forms of foods to chose are whole wheat pastas and potatoes.

Vitamin C is another important nutrient that helps keep the body under control. As the blood vessels have a tendency to contract and constrict themselves, vitamin C actually helps keep them more flexible. This allows for the body to remain much more healthy, and even fight strokes. Guavas make for the best fruit, as do oranges, very high in vitamin C.

Iron and its compounds also help a great deal. They help promote cell generations and restoration of the body, which often gets affected adversely at times of stress. This can translate not only in terms of harm to the body, but also to the skin and hair. The iron, phosphorous and other compounds in fruits like apples help keep all these issues in check.

Fibres are most important as they help regulate the system, and also keep all levels in check – like blood sugar, pressure and other parameters. Opt for soluble fibres like oats, and also soya for the best results.
