July 31, 2009

A large number of people experience debilitating chronic muscle and ligament pain, which is known as fibromyalgia.

Although, both men and women could be affected by this painful condition, but for unknown reasons, overwhelming majority of fibromyalgia patients are women. Women from mid 30 to mid 50 primarily suffer from this illness.

Fibromyalgia symptoms

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are unknown. The primary symptom of this illness is pain in the muscles and ligaments. The shoulder, neck, back and hip are primarily affected by fibromyalgia pain. The pain is worse in the morning, after waking up from sleep.

The stiffness and pain in the morning, is also accompanied by increased tenderness, burning and flu-like symptoms. fibromyalgia patients also suffer from extreme fatigue, insomnia and dizziness. Sometimes they may also experience gastrointestinal problems. If the illness becomes severe, the patient might also suffer from loss in memory, difficulty in concentration and depression.

Fibromyalgia home remedies

Since the risk factors responsible for fibromyalgia are not known, we hardly know how to prevent this painful illness. Perhaps leading a healthy lifestyle could help you to prevent this ailment. Pain medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen could be used to reduce muscle and ligament pains.

Regular low impact exercises such as walking, biking and swimming helps to reduce the frequency of the pain. However, fibromyalgia patients should avoid vigorous exercises and weight training, which could increase the muscle pain further. Gently massaging the sore muscles with warm mustard oil could help to reduce the pain. You can also apply hot compress on the painful muscles.

Fibromyalgia patients could keep their discomfort under control through proper diet. Certain fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, cucumber, pumpkin, zucchini, beetroot, squash, lime and coconut is beneficial for fibromyalgia patients.

Fibromyalgia patients should stay away from spinach, broccoli, potato, okra, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant, sugar, yogurt, tea, coffee, alcohol and cocoa. Drinking ginger tea twice everyday could reduce the muscle pain. Add ½ teaspoon of turmeric paste to a glass of warm water and take it twice every day to reduce the pain. Bathe in warm water. Add two cups of Epsom salt to your bath water.
