Fighting Bone Trouble

October 13, 2008

It is a common problem to have bones that get extremely brittle and break easily as we age. It is not rare to find bone that crack while simple tasks like propping oneself up from seated position, or broken bones from getting up while lying down occur. Most times this occurs due to Osteoporosis.

The condition literally means porous bones. As women age, calcium from the bones is gradually stolen and they weaken with time. In severe cases it is diagnosed with fractures and breakages, while other symptoms include severe or chronic pain.

The main causes for Osteoporosis are the lack of an adequate diet, and lack of exposure to sufficient sunlight. Deficiencies of protein, vitamin C and calcium account for Osteoporosis as age advances. Since Osteoporosis is a condition that cannot be reversed easily, the best way to prevent this ailment is by taking preventive measures.

The best way to build bone resistance is to care well for the body during the early years. A balanced diet with sufficient calcium, vitamin C and protein is vital. Vitamin D is obtained from exposure to sunlight which is also essential for the body.

Regular exercise is very critical for the body. Not only for its overall well-being, but also in building the strength and resistance of the bones. Regular exercise also helps the body absorb calcium better.

Regular check-ups are also recommended to help detect the problem early. Especially after the age of forty, and post menopause, check ups must be made frequently or even if a minor ailment occurs.

Caring for ourselves is the only way we can ensure a healthy and disease free life. If we can’t care for our own body now, the body will not be able to care for us later.
