Fish Oil For Healthy Living

Fish oil has emerged as the new health food. Studies have unearthed several benefits of consumption of fish oil. Even though the term fish oil is used in a generic sense, the actual nutrients that can be derived from the fish oil are determined by the water in which the fish live and the degree of purity of the fish oil.

The benefits derived from fish oil are primarily attained from the omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil. You would find omega-3 fatty acids also in the flesh of the fish, but the proportion of this fatty acid is far greater in the fish oil. Studies have also shown that cold water fish, such as salmon, sardines or mackerel have greater amount of omega-3 fatty acids than the warm water fish.

Omega3 fatty acids are present in the fish oil in the form of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Other nutritious compounds found in fish oil include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Protects the heart

The biggest benefit of fish oil is its ability to prevent cardiovascular ailments. It is observed that despite their fat rich diet, Inuits living in the polar regions are less likely to develop heart diseases. Abundant consumption of sea fish seems to prevent heart diseases in the Inuits naturally. Fish oil helps to increase the level of good cholesterol in the body.

It reduces the level of both bad cholesterol as well as triglyceride level in the blood. By preventing oxidation of LDL cholesterol, fish oil prevents cholesterol deposits from clogging the coronary arteries. Intake of fish oil could prevent atherosclerosis, heart attacks and heart failure.

Arthritis treatment

Consumption of fish oil could reduce the symptoms of arthritis. It is especially helpful in preventing degeneration of the bones and cartilages from the action of the enzymes. The anti-inflammatory property of fish oil could help to reduce the swelling and pain associated with arthritis.

Good for the brain

Fish oil is also the food for your brain. Omega-3 fatty acid could protect the brain cells from age related degeneration. Fish oil could prevent age related memory loss and even Alzheimer’s disease.
