Ganglion Cyst Remedies
October 31, 2009
Non-cancerous cysts that sometimes occur on the joints and tendons of wrists, hands and feet are known as ganglion cysts. These cysts are often painless. However, sometimes they might cause discomfort and difficulty in moving joints of the wrist or feet.
One or multiple ganglion cysts might appear at a time. Sometimes several ganglion cysts might develop from a single joint or tendon. Ganglion cysts occur more in women than in men. These cysts usually occur in people between 20 and 40 years of age.
Ganglion cyst causes
The exact causes responsible for the development of ganglion cysts are not yet known. The pus filled bumps or cysts develop on the joints. Majority of ganglion cysts develop at the wrist joint. The fluid present in the cyst are similar to the jelly like substances that are present in the joints or around the tendons. It is believed that if the tissue of the joint breaks due to trauma and bulges out, ganglion cysts might develop.
Injury to the tendons and joints of the hands and feet can be responsible of this condition. People suffering from osteoarthritis might develop ganglion cysts. Damage of the joints due to arthritis could force the fluid present in the joints and around the tendons to accumulate into the sheath of the tendon, forming ganglion cysts. People performing regular and repetitive wrist movements could injure the joint or tendons, developing ganglion cysts.
Ganglion cyst symptoms
Ganglion cysts appear as soft bumps, usually 1 to 3cm in diameter. The cysts may develop gradually or suddenly. They may also shrink and disappear, only to reappear again. The size of the cyst changes according to the extent of your joint movement. The bumps become smaller when you rest your joint. With intense joint movement, the cysts become larger. Often ganglion cysts are painless. However, if they exert pressure on neighboring nerves, you might experience intense pain and weakness in the hand or feet.
Ganglion cyst remedies
Resting your wrist can help to shrink the ganglion cyst naturally. Wearing a wrist brace can help to prevent wrist movement. Doctors often drain the fluid in the cyst to reduce its size. Sometimes surgery might be required to heal the ganglion cysts. Applying white oak bark tea on the ganglion cyst could help to shrink it.
