Going Bananas

October 17, 2008

The banana is a fruit that is not only popular but also easily available. Probably the most ideal fruit for children and the elderly, banana contains a host of properties that make it a highly nutritive fruit.

This fruit subsides the air and fire aggravation and corrects imbalances in the body. Bananas contain sweet and astringent tastes, and are cold in action. The post digestive action being sweet, it is nutritious and heavy in digestion and subsides heat in the body. It is a tonic and diuretic, and helps form the stool.

Bananas should be consumed in moderate quantity. Since it is a heavy fruit, it could cause gastric upset or indigestion to some people after consumption. To combat this, a few seeds of cardamom can be taken to avoid gastric allergies created by plantains. Bananas do not agree with those who have cough, colds, and sneezing.

A very satisfying way of having bananas for those with a sweet tooth is by combining it with ghee(clarified butter) and sugar or honey. This increases the water element and sweetness in the body. This is a very useful remedy for those with excessive fire(acidity) and air(troubles pertaining to gas) in the body. Ladies suffering from white discharge, leucorrhoea and backache are benefited by the consumption of bananas.

While bananas find a strong use for those with gastric troubles, restraint in consumption should be exercised by those with diabetes and weight problems. Colitis can be cured easily with the intake of bananas. Sailors often used bananas with onion and lemon to keep free from scurvy.

Varieties of bananas like red, green yellow and golden bananas are available today in small and large sizes. The use of banana has been indicated in the cure of urinary disorders, and for those who have very voracious appetites. Unripe bananas also find use in making vegetables.

One banana can easily replace a small snack and is a more healthy way to eat. Use bananas regularly to keep away illnesses and disorders of the body.
