Goodness of Mango

March 30, 2009

Mango, “the fruit of India,” as it is sometimes called, is unique in its wealth of nutrients and richness of flavour. Its pungent flavor is loved by most but may be an acquired taste for some. It delivers a great one-two nutrition punch. No doubt, it is the favorite fruit of one and all. But one should not think that mango is just an epitome of good taste, it is also a bundle of nutrients.

Mangoes help in losing weight

Anyone wanting to lose weight will be sweet on mangoes. This versatile fruit is packed with nutrients, so you can eat less per meal and still meet the daily requirements for nutrition. Mangoes are also famous for their fleshy, stringy fruit, which is full of fiber and is a snack guaranteed to keep your raging appetite satiated until dinnertime.

Health Benefit

Mangoes are a superior source of beta-carotene. In fact, they are one of the top beta-carotene providers you can eat. Consuming large amounts of this antioxidant has been linked to a reduced risk of some forms of cancers. Mangoes are great sources of concentrated nutrients. So if you want to reduce your calorie consumption, mangoes are your first choice.

Mangoes are rich in another carotenoid called lycopene, which is a potent antioxidant. Lycopene works to protect cells and suppress tumor growth.

One need not have too many mangoes to get the right amount of nutrition. Just one mango provides almost an entire day’s worth of vitamin C. Unlike many other fruits, mangoes contribute several B vitamins and the minerals calcium and magnesium.

Medicinal uses of mangoes

Chew tender leaves to avoid bleeding in the gums. This reduces pain in the tooth.

Soak few tender leaves in water overnight and drink the water. This is supposed to help patients with diabetes. Eat a piece of raw sour mango with salt and honey, to overcome loose motion, constipation and indigestion. Eat raw mango pieces with black pepper and honey to avoid jaundice and other diseases related to stomach and liver.

Eat mango with salt to overcome thirst and reduces the effects of sun stroke during summer. Make a drink of roasted or raw mango pulp mixed with sugar, water and cardamom. This helps combat the heat in tropical countries.

One bowl of mango juice with a pinch of pepper serves as energy source to the body, increases inner glow of the skin and acts as diuretic. It also improves eye sight and immune power of the body.

Finely ground Mango seeds mixed with buttermilk taken twice a day helps people with piles and such disorders. During the mango season, drink a cup of milk after eating one ripe mango. The sugar of mango and protein in the milk helps improving overall health.
