Green tea for leukemia treatment
In a series of trials, researchers in Mayo Clinic have found that green tea extract could arrest growth of cancer cells in people suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Green tea owes its cancer fighting property to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major active component in green tea. In the eight-year long study, researchers of Mayo Clinic have found that green tea extract could slow down or stabilize chronic lymphocytic leukemia at the early stage of the disease.Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a form of blood cancer, which combines the symptoms of leukemia and lymphoma. CLL is characterized by elevated levels of leukemia cells in the bone marrow and blood. The leukemia cells penetrate the lymph nodes leading to inflammation of the lymph nodes. The Mayo Clinic researchers have found that green tea extract could lower the leukemia cell count. Researchers also observed more than 50 per cent reduction in the size of lymph nodes. People with blood cancer could tolerate high doses of green tea extract.
Green tea prevents oral cancer
Green tea might lower the risk of oral cancer. In a study reported in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center have found that green tea extract could prevent development of oral leukoplakia. Oral leukoplakia is a pre-malignant condition, which if left untreated leads to oral cancer. Polyphenols present in green tea inhibits development of pre-cancerous cells in the mouth. High doses of green tea extract could significantly lower therisk of oral cancer. Although, high doses of green tea do not cause toxic side effects, it might increase the risk of nervousness and insomnia.
Green tea treats side effects of cancer treatment
Skin damaged by radiation treatment in cancer patients could be healed with green tea extract. Researchers of USA’s University of California and Germany’s University of Freiburg have found that antioxidant compounds in tea could decrease toxicity that follows radiotherapy treatment. Both green as well as black tea could effectively treat the inflammatory skin conditions developing after cancer treatments.
