Artichoke also known as Globe Artichoke is a native plant of the Mediterranean region and Southern Europe. The botanical name of artichoke is Cynara cardunculus. The buds of the artichoke plant are edible.

They are used in Mediterranean and European cuisine. It is also used to give a distinct aroma to the Italian liquor called Cynar. Artichoke is also used by folk healers to treat various illnesses. Consumption of herbal tea made with artichoke can help to cure several health problems.

Nutrients in artichoke

Artichoke is a nutritious vegetable. It is rich in folate, vitamin C, magnesium, phosphorous and dietary fibers. It also contains moderate amounts of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, iron, potassium and zinc.

Improves digestion

Artichoke promotes appetite. It is good for the gastrointestinal health. It stimulates bile production, aiding in digestion. Artichoke contains Cynarin, which is a phytochemical that promotes bile flow. Herbal medicines or herbal tea made with either dry or fresh leaves and stems of the artichoke plant are used for treating digestion problems.

By providing beneficial bacteria present in our stomach essential nutrients, artichoke helps to increase the number of good bacteria present in the digestive tract. It can heal appetite loss, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn and bloating.

Reduces cholesterol

Artichoke leaves can help to reduce the total cholesterol level in the blood stream. Intake of artichoke leaves could significantly lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and triglyceride level in the blood stream. Artichoke could therefore prevent heart diseases and strokes. This vegetable or artichoke tea can be taken by overweight people. Artichoke could help to get rid of the excess fat in the body without any adverse side effect.

Natural diuretic

Artichoke is a natural diuretic. Diuretics help to remove the excess water in the body. People suffering from edema can take artichoke to increase water excretion through urination.

Lowers blood sugar

Artichoke is a beneficial vegetable for people suffering from diabetes. It helps to normalize the sugar level in the blood.
