Health Benefits of Coriander

The leaves and seeds of coriander are popular culinary ingredients. This herb is probably a native of the West Asia, North Africa and Southern Europe, from where it spread to other continents. The botanical name of coriander is Corinadrum sativum. It is also known as cilantro or Chinese parsley. All parts of the coriander plant are edible.

Nutrients in coriander

Coriander leaves and seeds contain several nutritious ingredients. It contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and C. Moreover, it contains dietary fiber, iron, magnesium and manganese. This herb and the volatile oil extracted from the coriander seeds are rich in flavonoids, phenolic acid and other phytonutrients. Herbalists often prescribe medicines made from different parts of the coriander herb for treating several illnesses.

Good for digestion

People suffering from indigestion could take two teaspoons of coriander juice mixed with a cup of buttermilk to cure digestion problems. Coriander juice could heal flatulence and nausea. Coriander could promote liver function. The phytonutrients present in this herb could protect the liver from toxins. Hepatitis patients could take coriander juice to reduce the symptoms of the disease. Coriander seeds can also help to cure diarrhea.

Reduces cholesterol level

To reduce total cholesterol level in your bloodstream, you can consume coriander leaves. Drinking juice extracted from coriander leaves could reduce the level of harmful cholesterol in the body. Coriander can significantly decrease the LDL or bad cholesterol and raise the level of HDL or good cholesterol in the body. Moreover, you can take tea, prepared by boiling coriander seeds in water, to keep your blood cholesterol level under control.

Good for the eyes

You can use cool coriander seed tea as eyewash. It helps to reduce eye burn and irritation. Conjunctivitis could be healed with coriander eyewash.

Remedy for heavy period

Women experiencing excessive menstrual bleeding could benefit from consumption of coriander seeds. The iron content in coriander could prevent anemia occurring from excess bleeding.

Good for the skin

Coriander seed pastes or coriander juice can be used in a face pack. The antioxidant rich phytonutrients make the skin supple. It can remove blackheads and pimples.
