Manganese is a mineral present in our body in very small quantities. Our body contains about 20 milligrams of manganese and is particularly seen in bones, liver, kidney, pancreas etc.

With out manganese our body won’t be able to do its normal functioning. This is because manganese serves as a co-enzyme that promotes most of the metabolic processes in the body. Manganese is present in pineapple, beetroot, raspberry, rice, oats, tropical fruits, spinach, lettuce, turmeric, cucumber, banana, green vegetables, almond etc.

Deficiency of Manganese

Deficiency of manganese in our body creates many problems like bone malformation, heart ailment, poor eyesight, muscular contraction, shivers, tremors, memory loss etc. Weight loss, high cholesterol, impaired reproductive system and hearing trouble are some other symptoms of manganese deficiency.

Absorption of calcium and iron are also found to be impaired in the absence of manganese. Low level of manganese will also cause problems in healing the wound as the ability of the body to produce collagen will get reduced.

Being antioxidant manganese will find out the free radicals present in the body and will neutralize it. Thus manganese protects our body from the harmful affects of free radicals.

Manganese is an essential component for the proper growth and functioning of the bones. It will increase the mineral density of bones as it helps in the absorption of calcium and iron. Manganese supplementation for those who have osteoarthritis or osteoporosis is found to be highly beneficial. It also has a major role in the formation of connective tissues and collagen.

Manganese plays an important role in maintaining the normal functioning of the brain. It is also ideal for treating certain nervous disorders like epilepsy.

Manganese is essential for the absorption of vitamins like vitamin A, E, glucosamine and also for the absorption of magnesium. Manganese will activate certain enzymes present in the body and thus promotes the absorption of these vitamins and minerals.

Manganese activates certain enzymes that aids in the metabolism of amino acids, cholesterol, fats, carbohydrates etc. It also helps in the metabolism of glucose. Further manganese has the power to regulate the normal functioning of the digestive tract.
