Health Benefits of Marshmallow

Marshmallow is noted for beautiful violet pink colored flowers that blossom during summer. You will come across marshmallow plants largely in damp places. The botanical name of marshmallow is Althaea Officinalis.
This perennial herb is believed to be a native plant of Europe. Although, the marshmallow herbs usually grow in the wild, given the several medicinal properties of this herb, marshmallow herbs are even commercially cultivated. The roots, leaves and flowers of the marshmallow plant are used for medicinal purposes.
Treating respiratory tract infection
Marshmallow is used for treating respiratory tract infections. The flowers of the herb are used for preparing herbal expectorant for treating cough. Decoction prepared by boiling 25 grams of marshmallow root with one liter of water, for about 15 to 20 minutes, helps to cure bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, tonsillitis and dry cough.
By drinking two to three cups of marshmallow decoction daily, symptoms of emphysema, which is a disease that causes difficulty in breathing, could be reduced. You can also gargle with marshmallow decoction to reduce hoarseness of throat and other throat infections.
Cures stomach problem
Marshmallow is used for treating several stomach problems. It can help to cure acid reflux. Peptic ulcer and gastritis can be healed with intake of marshmallow root. This herb can be used for treating constipation. It can help to provide relief from irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and colitis.
Urinary tract infection remedies
Marshmallow roots are recommended by herbalists for treating urinary tract infection. Folk healers suggest marshmallow for treating kidney problems and for eliminating kidney stones.
Treats skin problems
Marshmallow root and leaves are used for treating skin diseases. This herb is used for treating boils, skin ulcer, eczema, psoriasis and skin injuries. Poultice prepared with the paste of marshmallow root diluted with little water helps to heal skin inflammation and skin irritation.
Marshmallow poultice is also effective for reducing skin dryness. It can be applied on the face for about 15 minutes. The plant compounds present in this herb helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
