Health Benefits Of Massage Therapy

July 24, 2009

Massage therapy involves a cluster of techniques based on body science to promote and influence the soft tissues of body which further results in the toning of core nervous system, rejuvenates respiratory system, enhances blood flow, promotes metabolism and paces up the detoxification process of body.

It has been scientifically proven that if applied with correct techniques, massage can treat several ailments naturally. The five primary techniques involved in massage are stroking, rubbing, kneading, percussion and vibration. The efficacy of massage in treatment of several common health ailments had also been acknowledged by US department of health and human services.

Massage for Joints – Massage therapy is one of the most effective therapies for treatment of unbending and swollen joints.  The mechanical movements of massage assist in relaxation of stiff muscle tissues. For an immediate relief from pain caused by stiff and swollen joints, a hot bath for at least 30 minutes should be taken.

Post hot bath, the affected parts should be gently massaged with stroking and kneading techniques. These techniques are also valuable in treatment of muscle atrophy. Massaging with essential oils also endows with instantaneous relief.  However, massaging should be avoided in cases of severe inflammations on infectious diseases like diphtheria and gonorrhoea.

Massage for Nerves – In cases of acute inflammation, the blood circulation in nerves looses its pace and starts clogging. Gentle stroking massage technique should be applied to soothe nerves. Application of deep force on nerves should be avoided. A slight force by palm of hand on the spinal nerve aids in elevating the level of blood circulation. Appliance of gentle stroking on spinal nerve and entire back is a very effective method to cure sleeplessness.

Abdominal Massage – Abdominal massage helps in curing stomach disorders like constipation. The mechanical movement of massage kindles the peristalsis of small intestine, rejuvenates muscles of abdominal walls and enhances digestive tract. Persons suffering from hernia, diseases of urinary tract, ovaries, hypertension and bladder should avoid all kinds of massage.

The abdominal massage should be done on an empty stomach. Kneading technique with deep pressure on abdominal walls results in strengthening of walls. Use of essential massage oils to give abdominal massage endows with immediate relaxation of muscles and also is a valuable therapy to cure mild stomach ache.
