Health Benefits Of Scallop

October 14, 2009

If you love seafood, you can’t miss enjoying the delicious scallop delicacies. Scallops are known as bi-valve mollusks. In between the convex shells of the scallop is hidden the edible white muscle.

Scallop is packed with more than 80 nutrients. It is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and vitamin B12. Scallops are also a good source of low fat protein.

Good for the heart

The nutrients found in scallop are good for the heart. Omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B12 are some essential nutrients needed for keeping your heart healthy. Vitamin B12 is needed for lowering the homocysteine level in the body.

Homocysteine is a byproduct of protein metabolism. High levels of homocysteine increase the risk of atherosclerosis, heart diseases and stroke. Omega-3 fatty acids help to lower the bad cholesterol level in the bloodstream. It is essential for preventing formation of blood clots in the blood vessels.

Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids could improve heart function. By increasing the heart rate variability, omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood could decrease arrhythmia risk. Both potassium and magnesium help to promote smooth blood circulation. They help to normalize the blood pressure level.

Reduces osteoporosis symptoms

People suffering from osteoporosis could consume scallops to reduce joint pains and inflammation. Researchers have found that high homocysteine level could aggravate the symptoms of osteoporosis. Vitamin B12 found in scallops could reduce homocysteine level. From four ounces of scallops, you can get about 1/3 of our daily vitamin B12 requirement.

Reduces deep vein thrombosis

The nutrients found in scallops could reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Studies have shown than people who eat fish or seafood, at least once every week, could reduce deep vein thrombosis risk by about 30 to 45 percent.

Asthma cure

Intake of scallop could help to reduce the symptoms of asthma. Omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium could reduce wheezing. Omega-3 could also reduce inflammation of the airways during asthma attacks.

Prevents cancer

It is believed that vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids could prevent cancer. Studies have found that adequate intake of these two nutrients could reduce the risk of colon and rectum cancers.
