Health Benefits of Thyme

Thyme is a popular culinary ingredient. Besides adding flavor to our foods, this culinary herb has immense health benefits. Thyme has been used for centuries, all over the world, for diverse reasons. The Romans believed that bathing in water sprinkled with thyme would make them strong. They also believed sprigs of thyme are capable of bringing good luck. Other than these ancient medicinal uses of thyme, this herb has some real health benefits.
Cures Eye Infections
The antiseptic property of thyme is used for curing conjunctivitis, pink eyes and sty. Prepare a thyme tea and apply the tea bag on the exterior of the affected eye, to cure the disease.
Cures respiratory problems
Thyme is used as an expectorant. It can cure coughs, sore throat, cold and whopping cough. Even though honey in general is beneficial in treating coughs, thyme honey, which is honey obtains by bees from thyme plants, are particularly effective in curing throat infections. Thyme is good for the over all respiratory health. It is effective in curing ailments of the lungs, trachea and bronchial tubes. Thyme is useful in treating bronchitis.
Its antispasmodic action helps in proper working of the bronchial cilia and the bronchial mucosa. Hence, thyme can be safely used for treating asthma. Drink thyme tea three to four times a day to cure coughs. To prepare thyme tea, soak a teaspoon of crushed thyme in half cup of boiling water for ten to fifteen minutes. You can also add honey to the tea.
Helps in digestions
Thyme aids digestions. It is capable of curing gastroenteritis.
Prevents cancer
Thyme is rich in ursolic acid and rosemarinic acid. These are terpenoids, which are believed to be effective in preventing cancer.
Cures menstrual cramps
Women suffering from painful pre menstrual syndrome can drink thyme tea to cure menstrual cramps.
Preservative
The Egyptians used this herb for embalming the mummy. Thyme when added to foods, makes them last for a long time.
Disinfectant
Thyme is used as a disinfectant. It can be used for curing wounds and infection. Thyme tea can be used as an effective mouth wash.
